Creative Ways to Follow Up When Networking

writing-hand

Last week I mentioned that you should follow up in the next 24-48 hours.  There are several ways to accomplish that task:

  • Email
  • Phone call
  • Hand Written Note (use blue ink)

Email

This seems to be the easiest way to reconnect with someone you’ve met.  Just last week I got an email with the usual form letter that said we had met at a luncheon.  Oh she was there O.K. but we were never introduced.  It may be an easy way to follow up but it has a low value in building a true relationship, one in which your prospect will buy from you.

Phone Call

This is better than an email when it comes to value in building a true relationship.  If you’re going to make phone call follow ups be prepared and DON’T try to sell a product over the phone.  If they ask about your product make an appointment to come see them or invite them to coffee or go to their office.

Hand Written Note (use blue ink)

I got a reply email last week asking why blue ink? I knew someone would ask me that.  Black is a business color, you’ve heard the expression “it’s either black or white”. Right or wrong.  Do those words send a message of sincerity or do you get the warm fuzzies?

Blue is a warm, calming color, it’s peaceful, it invokes a closeness, a sincerity and things you want in a trusting relationship.  When you’re trying to build a relationship a close personal relationship, use blue, it sends a message of friendship, trust, sincerity, etc.
